A couple of days ago, I picked up my new car, an Audi A3 Sportback. Together with the Audi A3, I ordered an iPod interface wiring harness, which is compatible with iPods since the 3rd generation like iPod mini, iPod nano, but not the iPod shuffle.
After connecting the iPod to the interface adapter in the glove compartment, the iPod can be accessed like a music CD. But wait, all information in your ipod about artist, title and so on, are not visible through the Audi A3 audio system. You just see a track number in the vehicle’s audio system and you can access up to five play lists like five CDs in a CD changer.
Conclusion:
It’s not as comfortable to choose music from the connected iPod as it could be.

Parts of the documentation of the Sun Java Enterprise System 2006Q4 are on docs.sun.com, now. I hope Sun doesn’t lock it all with a password, like in history. Parts of the docs are loocked now. To get beta dokumentation early, is good to plan a release change from a former Sun JES Release and to prepare an installation. The following new interessting modules are in the documentation collection, among others:
I hope the the other docs are following soon, I’m looking for the upcomming mobile support for mail and calendaring and the modified oulook connector.
There’s a new Software collection, called Coolstack, offered by Sun with Open Source software, compiled with Sun Studio 11, optimized for Solaris/Ultrasparc Platform.
Currently, there are Sun packages with Apache HTTP Server 2.0.58, MySQL 5.0.22, PHP 5.1.4, Perl 5.8.8 and Squid 2.5.STABLE14 Web Proxy Cache. The Software installs to /usr/local/ .
Within each package there’s a README File, which shows you, what options have been used to compile each package.
This could be a good starting point, if you want to compile your own binaries with Sun Studio 11.
I hope that Sun will compile the already in Solaris 10 included Open Source Packages like apache, mysql, perl with these options in future, too. And maybe, Sun will also put PHP into the supported Solaris distro in the future, like all Linux vendors do.
There’s a new entry level server from Sun, the Sun Fire X2200. This is a two Socket, 4-Way 1U Server with the latest AMD Opteron 2000 Series dual core processors (2218 (2.6 GHz), 2214 (2.2 GHz), 2210 (1.8 GHz)) with DDR2 memory Support. This box will support up to 64GB of memory in just one rack unit. I hope that the IPMI Service processor ist better than the one in the Sun Fire X2100, which is now also available as Sun Fire X2100 M2. The Sun Fire X2100 M2 has four gigabit ethernet ports now and the same design like the new X2200.
A new open source community project, called OpenDS is building a free and comprehensive next generation directory service. OpenDS is designed to address large deployments, to provide high performance, to be highly extensible, and to be easy to deploy, manage and monitor.
The open source directory service includes not only the Directory Server, but also other essential directory-related services like directory proxy, virtual directory, namespace distribution and data synchronization. Clients may communicate with it using standard network protocols (e.g. LDAP and DSML) to retrieve and update information.
Initial development of OpenDS was done by Sun Microsystems, but it is now available under the open source Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL).
If you’re interested in the new features within OpenDS, have a look at this Blog entry.
There’s a nice video on sun.com about the Sun Blade 8000 Server, where Andy Bechtolsheim talks about the new system.
